MilFact – A tale of two washers – rigid-mount vs. soft-mount washer-extractors

• Milnor recommends rigid-mount machinery when a washer is installed in a slab-on-grade location.

• Suspended (soft-mount) washer-extractors are recommended by Milnor for laundries on upper floors, over a crawl-space or above some other open area.

• When installing in these locations, request a dynamic load letter from your Milnor RSM that you can provide to the customer or the structural engineer for the project. These letters can protect you and your customer by providing detailed information about the forces our equipment can send into the floor and the structure around it. Early information can prevent later problems!

• Competitors selling cheap soft-mount machines routinely recommend these units for laundries trying to achieve high extract rates. However, advances in inverter drive technology now allow rigid-mount machines to safely achieve extract rates of up to 300-G’s, more than enough for maximum moisture removal.

• Rigid-mount machines deliver several advantages:
o They traditionally last longer than soft-mount machines. Many competitive soft-mount machines will last 10-15 years whereas Milnor rigid-mount machines usually go 15-20 years or longer.

o Rigid-mount machines have fewer parts than soft-mount machines. On average, soft-mount machines have up to several hundred more parts than a comparable rigid-mount unit. These are parts that can fail.

o They cost less than soft-mount machines. If you do find a soft-mount machine that costs less than a rigid-mount unit – beware of quality.
