SUBJECT: REPLACEMENT BATTERIES FOR MICROPROCESSOR BOARDS

Dear MILNOR Dealer:

To date, MILNOR has used three different batteries on our microprocessor boards. These batteries are utilized to retain microprocessor memory when machine power is turned off. A circuit on the processor board detects the presence of DC power and automatically switches to and from battery power as needed.

Like all batteries, the "useful life" of these batteries is limited. We anticipate a useful life of theses batteries to be approximately 10 years.

It is possible to replace a battery on the microprocessor board without replacing the entire board. The following steps can be used to replace microprocessor batteries:

BLUE NI-CAD batteries used on non-serial processor boards: These batteries may be replaced by de-soldering the battery connections and soldering a new battery to the board. This is a somewhat delicate procedure and should be accomplished by a technician familiar with soldering practices. These replacement batteries are available from MILNOR under part number 08BT003R6NC at a list price of $8.86 each (subject to change).

"GEL-CELL" batteries found on non-serial and serial processor board: These batteries are not soldered to the processor board, bu instead have "push-on" terminals in order to connect the wire leads from the processor board. In order to prevent damage to the board during shipping, these batteries have been "glued" to the processor board using silastic. A metal clamp was also used to insure alignment on the processor board.

These batteries may be "pried" from the processor board using extreme caution not to "lift" the traces on the PC board underneath the battery. The prying tool should at not time come in contact with any tract on the microprocessor board. Please be sure the battery connections are unplugged before attempting to remove the battery. Two versions of this battery were used to date. The original version of this battery was relatively "flat". The newer version is slightly taller and shaped like a cube. Replacement batteries will probably be "cubed shaped" and provided with the necessary mounting bracket to hold the battery to the board. We suggest that during installation of the battery, that the battery be held to the board with silastic so that the board is not damaged by the battery what exposed to a vibrating condition.

The Gel-Cell battery is available under part KXMIC00401 at a list price of $26.27 (subject to change).

Any battery replacement is performed at your risk. MILNOR will not be responsible for boards damaged by battery replacement.

If any technical assistance is needed during battery replacement, please call the MILNOR Technical Support Group at (504) 464-0163.

Thank you for your continuing confidence.

Yours truly,
