SUBJECT: Yellow Flames due to Clogged Combustion Air Diffuser Screens

Dear MILNOR Dealer/Customer,

As we have visited a number of sites using the 72072TG1 dryer, we have found many installations with "yellow flames" in the burner box. As most of you know, this is caused by lack of combustion air in the dryer.

After disassembling the combustion air ductwork and looking into the back of the burner assembly, we found significant clogging of the combustion air diffuser screen. This is very difficult to reach and clean because of the location of the burner in the plenum.

As a result of this finding, we developed a method to clean this screen which takes only minutes and a minor modification to the plenum and burner assembly.

The burner is manufactured by Eclipse, a very reputable burner manufacturer. In speaking to them related to the life expectancy of the burner and air mixing plates, they indicate that a lack of combustion air will normally cause the "wings" (located on the discharge side of the burner) to become "red hot" and crack. Ultimately, they crack and then missing parts of the wings allow too much combustion airflow from one point while not enough comes from the other ports in the combustion air wings. Then the wings would have to be replaced which involves much time and parts expense.

All of this can be avoided by regularly cleaning the combustion air fan (which is accessible through the left-hand side of the dryer through the combustion air screen) and the combustion air diffuser screen (located behind the burner).

The new air blast tool is simply a piece of stainless tubing with holes drilled in the end and will allow you to use compressed air to blow off the clogged lint within the burner assembly. The instructions are available for viewing and printing from the MILNOR web page at www.milnor.com by doing a search in the Technical Knowledge base on "yellow flame". The kit is available at no charge to the end user. Only one kit is necessary for each laundry.

The kit number is KTKBBCK001 and can be ordered directly through the MILNOR Parts Department.

If you have any questions or comments, please let me know.
